Back Pain

Casual man with back painMost people think that chiropractic care is all about back pain—and back discomfort is one of the most common reasons people seek our care at Freedom Chiropractic. But the reality is that pain of any kind, anywhere in the body, is simply the brain and nervous system’s way of telling us that something is wrong.

Finding the Cause

It comes as a surprise to many of our patients that the spot where they’re feeling pain may not be the true problem. For example, someone may experience discomfort in the legs that’s caused by a problem in the lower back. If we only address the legs and never bother to locate the root cause of the problem, your pain will possibly subside—temporarily. Then you’ll yo-yo back and forth, in pain and out of pain, because the underlying problem was never addressed.

The longer this yo-yo action goes on, the greater the severity of the problem will become over time.

Our initial work begins with your consultation. Oftentimes patients say they’ve been feeling “totally fine” until they woke up with an aching back one day. But as we talk with them and dig deeper into their history, we generally discover that even so-called “acute” situations stem from repetitive wear and tear, or a previous sports injury that never fully healed, or some trauma that happened in the past that didn’t seem like anything at the time, so it was never properly addressed.

After your consultation, we’ll conduct a thorough examination. Since we don’t want to simply “chase the pain,” we assess your entire nervous system and spinal column to determine where interference is located. It’s this interference in the nervous system (subluxation) that needs to be corrected so we can restore proper movement to the joints of the spine. When your spine and nervous system are functioning correctly, your back discomfort can resolve.

Customized Care

Two people may come in with back pain that seems identical, but the underlying cause is always unique. We tailor your care specifically to your situation, and that includes both chiropractic adjustments and rehab. We need to re-educate the muscles, otherwise muscle memory will cause them to keep pulling your back into the position that caused the discomfort.

Sometimes people tell us they stretch and stretch, but their “tight” muscle never gets looser. This may be because the muscle isn’t tight, it’s weak and it needs to be properly engaged. We figure out those issues and design your rehab accordingly.

Think about this; We know that the combination of brushing our teeth and flossing gives the best results for our oral health. In the same way, chiropractic care and rehab together offers faster, more complete results and helps you stay healthier, longer.
