The Benefits of Pediatric Chiropractic

“Why would I bring my child to a chiropractor?”
We do not look at your baby’s health through the lens of pain or spinal problems alone. Instead, we take a neurospinal-based approach that focuses on your child’s overall health, function and well-being.
Neurological stress often begins before birth. If a mother’s pregnancy is filled with mental, emotional, or physical stress, her body can remain in a constant state of fight-or-flight. The challenge is that mom and baby are deeply connected, and that chronic stress can be passed on to the baby as well.
Then, from the moment they are born — whether making their way through a narrow birth canal or being delivered via C-section or with the assistance of forceps — there is a likelihood of stress or trauma to the nervous system, which may contribute to a wide range of childhood symptoms. Even a natural delivery involves significant twisting and pulling. While necessary to bring your baby safely into the world, this process can place stress on the nervous system.
Since a baby can’t tell you when something is wrong, they often show symptoms that don’t look like what you’d expect from someone in pain. That’s why we recommend an evaluation early in life.
Our INSiGHT Scan technology allows us to accurately identify areas that are “stuck” or stressed within your baby’s nervous system. The longer these areas go undetected and uncorrected, the more likely they are to progressively worsen.
Through a specific neurologically focused chiropractic adjustment — which uses the gentlest, lightest touch — a child’s brain and nervous system can communicate properly, allowing them to grow, develop, and flourish.
Ensuring Proper Spinal Alignment
With proper motion, alignment and neurological focus the vagus nerve is stimulated and regulated. This creates less interference with your body’s ability to heal and function. If we begin addressing neurospinal function at a young age instead of waiting for a problem, your child has the best opportunity to experience abundant health.
Once healthy function is restored, many of our pediatric patients are what we call “Well Babies.” They are healthy, thriving kids and don’t have problems but still see us periodically to maintain their health. As your baby grows into a child, trauma occurs daily. It’s a good idea to have them maintain consistent neurologically based chiropractic care, ensuring their spine stays healthy and the neurological communication stays free of interference as they continue to grow.

What to Expect
The first thing we do is have an in depth consultation and discussion with the parents on the pregnancy to find out if there was excess stress in the mom’s life and any issues during the pregnancy which can have a major impact on the babies neurological health. We then discuss in detail your labor.
These days, the prevalence of C-sections, forceps and vacuum has gone up significantly. The use of those interventions can be very traumatic on a baby’s spine. We discuss your labor and then we start to discuss how the baby is doing overall. Specifically, we ask how the baby is eating, feeding (is your baby nursing equally with both breasts), pooping and sleeping. We call these the soft signs. From there we go into greater detail on any specific concerns the parents may have.
Visual checks
We will look at the following as part of the visual examination:
- Is your infant tracking with sounds and movement?
- Is any hypertonicity present where your baby looks very tight?
- Are there any abnormalities such as torticollis where the neck is in severe contracture and pulling the ear down toward the shoulder?
- Is Baby fussy and fidgety or uncomfortable at all?
- How does the skin look?
- Is there an even wear pattern on their skull?
Palpatory exam
We then do a very light palpatory exam where we feel the base of the skull, the upper cervical Atlas (C1) and the Axis (C2). We also check the sacrum and the hips and see if there is easy movement.
Rest assured that the adjustments we perform on infants are highly gentle. If you take your middle finger and push on your eyeball while it’s closed that’s the amount of force we use to adjust a baby.
Finally, an Insight scan is performed that is broken down into multiple different scans. Heart Rate Variability, Thermal Scan and NeuroCore scan are all completed and these findings are combined to give us a core score to not only tell us how much stress your child’s neurology is currently under and specific areas of the nervous system that are “stuck”, causing interference and symptomatology.
All portions of our first consultation and examination are compiled to determine how to help your child regain function and health as quickly and efficiently as possible.
