Vertigo Relief in Colorado Springs
When the room spins, your balance feels “off,” or nausea hits out of nowhere, it’s hard to work, drive, or even roll over in bed. At Freedom Chiropractic, we look beyond quick fixes to identify common and overlooked contributors to vertigo symptoms—especially when standard tests don’t fully explain what you’re feeling.
Common Causes of Vertigo
Vertigo and balance disturbances can stem from several interconnected systems in your head and neck. Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) occurs when tiny calcium crystals in your inner ear dislodge and drift into the wrong canal, confusing your brain’s sense of motion—often triggered by head trauma, ear infections, or simply aging.
Upper cervical dysfunction is an overlooked contributor: misalignment or restricted motion at the atlas (C1) and skull base disrupts the proprioceptive signals your brain uses to orient itself in space, especially since this area is densely packed with balance-related nerves. Chronic neck tension—from poor posture, whiplash injuries, computer work, or stress—can compress nerves and blood vessels that feed the inner ear and vestibular system.
Post-concussion issues and vestibular migraines can also create vertigo by irritating the balance centers directly. Because these mechanisms often overlap, effective treatment requires identifying which system is the primary driver.
Vertigo symptoms may involve:
- Inner-ear irritation (including BPPV/crystal displacement)
- Tight, overworked neck and suboccipital muscles
- Upper cervical joint stress—particularly around the atlas (C1) and the base of the skull
Because these systems interact, the right plan starts with the right assessment.
How We Evaluate Vertigo
Your visit includes a focused history (triggers, duration, posture, neck injuries, migraines), balance and neurological screening, and an upper cervical exam. If your symptoms suggest urgent medical evaluation (sudden severe headache, fainting, new weakness/numbness, slurred speech, vision loss), we’ll refer you immediately. But this is very rare and not normally the case.
Our Gentle, Two-Angle Approach
We tailor care to your tolerance—especially if lying down or quick head movements worsen symptoms:
- Specific upper cervical adjustments (with gentle or instrument-assisted options)
- Soft-tissue release for suboccipital and neck tension
- Modified Epley-style positioning when inner-ear crystals are suspected and appropriate
- Simple balance and proprioception exercises to support steadier movement
